We are pleased to announce the launch of the Kliakhandler Program in Central Asian Studies at the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Faculty of Humanities, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Thanks to a generous private donation, this new academic program aims to expand and deepen our knowledge about this pivotal region, stretching from Mongolia in the east to Kazakhstan in the west, and including Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and the Xinjiang region of China. This area, a central hub of the "Silk Roads," has served for centuries as a vital point of encounter and mutual exchange between different cultures and civilizations in Eurasia.

The Kliakhandler Program in Central Asian Studies seeks to deepen scientific and cultural collaborations with the republics of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Mongolia. The program will focus on the study of Central Asia from prehistoric times to the modern era, incorporating diverse disciplines.

As part of the academic activities, the program will host lectures by leading international scholars, organize conferences, and offer postdoctoral fellowships for young researchers wishing to specialize in Central Asian studies. Additionally, the program will provide financial support for field research in the region, with an emphasis on projects that integrate natural science methods. Other planned activities include funding scholarships for doctoral students from Central Asia, joint conferences and seminars with leading institutions in Central Asia, study tours, international summer workshops, and the teaching of Central Asian languages at the Hebrew University. The program will be directed by Professor Michael Shenkar from the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.

The Hebrew University has long excelled in Central Asian studies, with leading scholars, each bringing unique expertise across various fields. The Kliakhandler Program represents a unique opportunity to forge scientific, cultural, and research collaborations that will strengthen the Hebrew University's position as a leading institution in Central Asian studies in Israel and worldwide.
